Terrafugia’s second year exhibiting at the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) AirVenture in Oshkosh, WI during the last week of July was a great success.  In addition to the wind tunnel model that was on display in 2006, the team brought the 1/5^th scale remote-controlled Transition® that was flight tested in June of 2007 and a Proof-of-Concept flight weight composite folding wing.  Over 500 demonstrations of the wing’s ability to fold and deploy with the pilot comfortably in the cockpit were conducted over the course of the show.  The team also spoke with members of the aviation insurance community during the show, securing a simple path forward for Transition® owners to receive coverage for their vehicles.  Rough estimates indicate that the Terrafugia team spoke with 15,000 – 20,000 aviation enthusiasts over the course of the show.  Thank you to everyone that made it by!

Terrafugia’s team has grown since Oshkosh, allowing progress on the design and construction of the Transition® Proof-of-Concept to continue to accelerate at Terrafugia’s prototype development facility located outside of Boston, MA.  After completion of the folding wing Proof-of-Concept, which was completed on schedule and shown at Oshkosh this past July, attention was shifted to construction of the fuselage and empennage along with detailed design of other mechanical components.  To date, plugs and molds for the empennage and fuselage are being constructed and a custom baking oven is ready to cure the pre-impregnated composite parts for these major vehicle structures as they are completed.  A Proof-of-Concept deformable aerodynamic bumper (patent pending) for use on the canard leading edge and elevator trailing edge has also been constructed and successfully undergone preliminary testing.

Since returning from Oshkosh, members of the Terrafugia team have spoken at the SAE AeroTech Congress and Exhibition in Los Angeles, CA, the NCAE Leadership Conference on Aviation and Space Education in Arlington, VA, and at a meeting of the Burlington RC Flyers in Lexington, MA.  Additionally, Terrafugia hosted a presentation and tour of its prototype development facility for the Boston Chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association, EAA 106.

At the beginning of October, Terrafugia will be speaking at the FAA Airports Division Central Region Conference in Overland Park, KS.  The next show where you can meet the Terrafugia team will be the Sport Aviation Expo, held in Sebring, FL, January 17-20, 2008.
