Test Engineer

Terrafugia is a fast-paced, energetic company that is developing the world’s first practical flying car. We are currently looking for a world-class Test Engineer to join our vehicle development team. Candidates should be self-starters who bring positive attitude, integrity, and enthusiasm to our team as we transform personal transportation.


As a Key Contributor You Will serve as a liaison between test engineering and design engineering personnel while supporting component, system, drive and flight testing in a variety of capacities and providing mentorship and guidance to junior test engineers

Key Responsibilities and Activities

  • Work with lead engineers to ensure appropriate test preparation by:
    • Identifying in-house resources or sourcing new software, instrumentation or external test labs
    • Developing “shakeout criteria” to validate test equipment
    • Developing operating procedures for test equipment
  • Work with technicians to set up equipment, test articles and facilities for test execution
  • Create equipment/instrumentation operator instructions to train other test engineers and technical personnel
  • Install, configure and calibrate any instrumentation used for data recording, and test telemetry for flight and drive testing
  • Integrate and debug test and data acquisition systems
  • Develop software programs to collect test measurements/telemetry
  • Assist lead engineers in executing tests, as well as manage test safety throughout testing
  • Monitor (on-site) test telemetry during flight and drive test deployments
  • Verify tests are conducted according to test plans and regulatory guidelines and document discrepancies
  • Document test setup information for test reports, including conformity/discrepancy records

Required Skills and Experience

  • BS degree in mechanical, electrical automotive or aerospace engineering and 5+ years technical work experience
  • Experience with SOLIDWORKS
  • Mechanical and/or electrical aptitude
  • Experience operating typical mechanical and electric shop equipment including:
    • Mills, lathes and assorted hand tools
    • Multimeters, oscilloscopes, soldering stations and electrical wiring tools
  • Experience developing data acquisition programs in LabVIEW, Matlab, Python, VBA or similar software
  • Proven experience in a testing environment operating test equipment
  • Outstanding organization, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation communication skills

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Experience in aerospace or automotive testing
  • Proven experience conducting development and certification testing of mechanical/electrical hardware
  • Familiarity with ASTM, SAE or FMVSS testing and results presentation
